Student and School Health
Kellie Knutson, School Nurse
In order to allow your student to be perform at their best, it is important to not only safeguard their health, but the health of all students. In order to faciliate this in the best possible manner, the following policies and guidelines are in place.
Occassionally, it is prudent to post medical information relating to current events for your information. For any questions or concerns regarding flu shots or H1N1 "Swine flu", we have provided a link to the Grays Harbor County website. As more information becomes available, we will post additional information.
Medication Policy
You may not have medications in your possession at school, including both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. If you need to take medication during school hours, it must be held and given by office staff. A note from your parent along with OTC medications is sufficient. Prescription medications require a doctor’s authorization to administer the medication. Your parent must come to the attendance office and complete a form to authorize prescription medication at school. Students who use asthma inhalers or epi-pens for severe allergies should see the nurse and arrange to have a spare inhaler or epi-pen kept at the school.
Too sick for school?
When a student is absent, they must report to the attendance office and obtain a green admit slip before returning to class. A written note from their parent stating the reason for the absence or a phone call to the attendance office is required for the absence to be excused. District policy requires absences to be excused within 48 hours or they become an unexcused absence. The Attendance Office direct phone line is (360) 482-4530.
Extended Illness or Health Condition
If a student is to be confined to home or hospital for an extended period, the school will arrange for the availability of assignments. The district will cooperate with private tutors parents may employ. In some instances of long-term illness homebound teachers can be provided. At the high school level, if the student is unable to do his or her schoolwork, or if there are major requirements of a particular course, which cannot be accomplished outside of class, the student may be required to take an incomplete or withdraw from the class without penalty.
Excused Absence for Chronic Health Condition
Students with a chronic health condition, which interrupts regular attendance, may qualify for placement in a limited attendance and participation program. The student and his/her parents or guardian shall apply to the principal or designee and limited program shall be written following advice and recommendation of the student's medical advisor. The school principal or designee shall approve the recommended limited program. The staff shall be informed of the student's needs, though the confidentiality of medical information shall be respected at the parent's request.
